Excellent book. Should be taught in schools.
Of the assertions in this book are accurate, Khan has made his case. But, apologies or no, if he wants to be taken seriously as a scholar, the author needs to seriously clean up the grammar in this book. I realize that translation might be an issue, but that's really no excuse-the editing is atrocious.
Less hyperbolic language might help as well. Nobody needs the author to decide for us whether an event was 'horrific' or if victims need to be describes as 'those poor people!' It just plays up the author's bias.
The author delves deep into history, relying on Islamic sources and eyewitness accounts as much as possible. A few quotes from some of today's more notorious critics of Islam are unnecessary and don't really add anything of use to the history presented.
Despite these troubles, among his other arguments, Khan quite handily dispenses with the idea that Jihad is nothing more than an 'internal struggle', however commendable it may be to try to get the world to adopt that view, it always has, and still does, cover an ascending list of right behaviors when it comes to spreading Islam, starting with negotiation, and ending in forced conversion if that fails. The 'internal struggle' bit, merely governs how one should conduct Oneself while pursuing Jihad's other aim; to spread itself by any means necessary.
Khan describes the methods historically used; 'negotiation', threats, coercion, oppression, warfare, genocide and ethnic cleansing, on a scale, and in a timeframe that puts all other religions to shame.
Islam is religion's even darker counterpart to Western imperialism, and it is a far, far, worse thing.

As a Bostonian now living in Israel, I was forced to face the ugly legacy of Islamic hate, when I was almost killed in the Hamas mass atrocity on June 1, 2001 in Tel Aviv....22 human beings were blown to pieces that horrific Friday night, and Hamas has gone on to praise the perpetrators and even name streets after these most cowardly of killers...street signs and plaques paid for by USAID, no less! I have studied a lot of history, but never had I been informed about this entire era of Islamic expansion by violent savagery. Why is it not taught in our schools? I found the book fascinating, and I did a lot of cross checking to make sure it was accurate. It appears to be correct!
Wow what a book. To the point. Slamming a certain religion with so well argued points and facts that you will tend to vomit on the deeds of the profet and his followers. Least you will feel that this certain religion that could not be even a least deserving moral code how can it end up like one of largest religion. Oh the power of sword. Men remain animals.
